Cataract Experts in Smithtown and Riverhead New York, which implant is right for me?

September 07, 2011 @ 08:05 AM — by unknown

In cataract surgery, the board certified eye doctors at North Shore Eye Care have a choice in state of the art intraocular lens implants that are used to replace the cloudy cataract lens.  Our Smithtown and Riverhead patients are able to make an educated decision after reviewing the possbile options.

A cataract is a clouding of the natural lens of the eye.  This happens to people as they age.  Medications and certain situations like overexposure to UV light can also cause cataract.  The lens of the eye sits right behind the iris or colored part of the eye.  It is attached to the wall of the eye by zonules or strings.  These zonules support the lens in the eye so that it is stable and can focus.  When the lens of the eye becomes cloudy, symptoms like glare with oncoming headlights at night, glare with sunlight and blurred vision begin to impair one's function.  When the symptoms of cataract become severe enough, patients can elect to have cataract surgery.

At North Shore Eye Care, we perform modern cataract surgery using small incisions without stitches, needles around the eyes or even an eye patch.  This technique takes a few minutes on average and patients can return home the very same day with little to no discomfort.  When the cataract or cloudy lens is removed, an intraocular lens implant or IOL is placed in the eye to restore vision.  These implants have been used to many years and are safe and effective.   There are several types of implants starting with the standard implants that correct distance vision only, but do not correct near vision or astigmatism.  For many people that don't mind wearing glasses, these implants are perfectly fine.  For those patients that desire to wear glasses less often, a toric intraocular lens implants reduces or eliminates astigmatism, giving patients with astigmatism better vision without glasses.  For patients that desire vision for far and near without glasses, we can use multifocal or accommodating implants such as Tecnis Multifocal, Restor, or Crystalens.  These premium implants are designed to reduce or eliminate the need for glasses for far and near.

The board certified eye doctors at North Shore Eye Care in Smithtown and soon to be opened Riverhead location are pleased to discuss options with patients as they begin to develop cataracts.  Feel free to make an appointment with one of our cataract experts.
