Cataract surgery continues to evolve at a rapid rate.   With the advancement of new technologies patients find it easier to undergo and recover from this procedure.  Not to long all cataract surgeries were hospital based with a hospital stay lasting several days.  Sutures shortened these stays by creating water tight wounds which greatly decreased the infection rate.  However with modern day surgery we are now able to remove cataracts with self sealing micro-incisions that no longer require sutures.  This has totally eliminated the need for hospital stays and in fact more and more cataract procedures are performed in free standing units that are independent of hospitals.  These free standing units often provide better care than can be found in most hospitals.  This is partly because these free standing units can specialize in only one field.  This results in specialization so that the nurses and techs that work in these centers only have to deal with one field that leads to increased competency with less potential for errors.  Furthermore many hospitals are finding themselves with budgetary constraints due to decreased reimbursements amongst other possible problems.  As a result they may be slower in updating to the latest equipment.
