A cataract is a clouding of the natural lens of the eye. When this process interferes with a patient's quality of life whether it be night driving, glare with sunlight or general blurred vision, our eye doctors will consider cataract surgery. Cataract surgery is performed through a small incision with no stitches, no needles and no eye patch after surgery. Our cataract surgery takes a few minutes and patients return to the comfort of their home the very same day. There is usually no pain or discomfort before, during or after the cataract procedure.
After a cataract is removed, we place an intraocular lens implant to restore vision. All cataract surgery includes an implant these days and implant technology has improved dramatically over the last decade. Patients can choose a standard intraocular lens implant that will allow a patient to see very well, but the need for glasses is often still there. There are toric intraocular lens implants that correct astigmatism. Astigmatism represents a cornea that is more football shaped rather than basketball shaped. This causes blurred vision at distance and near. For those patients that want to see far and near without the use of glasses, the choices are multifocal implants or accommodating implants. Multifocal implants like the Restor or Tecnis Multifocal are great for far and near, but sometimes cause rings around lights at night. The Crystalens, an accommodating implant, is great for far and near, but sometimes patients still require a light magnifier for fine print. As the lens technology continues to progress, the eye doctors at North Shore eye care will be ready to help our patients with the best of the best.
