The cataract specialists at North Shore Eye Care offer wide range of intraocular lenses at the time of surgery

June 04, 2011 @ 12:54 PM — by Lawrence Zweibel

Many patients are thrilled at the thought that not only are they able to see better following cataract surgery, but often for the first time they are able to achieve spectacle independence.  The cataract experts Drs. Lawrence Zweibel, Dr. Jeffrey Martin, and Dr. John Mauro are all board certified Ophthalmologists who always offer the latest technology for their patients.  This includes the latest updates with phacoemulsification surgery as well as the latest intraocular lenses that are used when replacing the cataractous lens.

Some lens designs are used to enhance reading vision without  the use of glasses.  These lenses come in two designs.  One type is known as a multifocal lens which has both a reading and distance focus imbedded on the lens.  These lenses not only offer good near and distance vision, but also good intermediate vision.

Another type of lens is an accommodative lens that has only  a single focus on the lens.  Since this lens is very flexible it can move forward within the eye as you attempt to read.  This increases the effective strength of the lens enabling you to focus on near objects.

For those patients with significant astigmatism specialized toric lenses are available.  Until recently only low to moderate levels of astigmatism could be corrected, but in the last few weeks newer lenses have become available enabling us to correct higher levels of astigmatism.
