Do 3D Movies cause eye strain? Ask the eye doctors at North Shore eye care

May 04, 2011 @ 10:59 PM — by unknown

There is rising concern that watching 3D movies may be making people sick.  There is some evidence that viewing in 3D may cause added eye strain and make people dizzy or cause headaches.  At North Shore eye care in smithtown new york in long island, we wanted to look into this.  Although the industry of 3D is growing with tremendous fervor, that does not mean that this style of viewing is comfortable for the human visual system.  3D screens and glasses create the illusion of depth by showing different images to each eye.  That simulates the way objects appear in each eye as slightly different at different distances.  This illusion can cause fatigue and discomfort and can often make people dizzy or give a significant headache.  3D movies don't affect everyone in this negative way, but it is common enough that the American Optometric Association conducted a survey that found that 25 % of viewers of 3D movies did have some discomfort, headaches, blurred vision or nausea  At North Shore eye care, we take this information with a grain of salt.  Our board certified eye doctors that specialize in cataract surgery and lasik laser vision correction need to see more evidence that 3D movies may be a problem for the human visual system.  We look forward to more evidence.
