Cataract surgery in 2011...what is new?

North Shore eye care in smithtown new york is a leader in cataract surgery in long island.  The new buzz technology in cataract surgery is laser cataract surgery using femtosecond laser.  There are three companies trying to bring laser cataract surgery to market and our board certified eye doctors are anticipating this game changing technology.  Currently, our board certified cataract surgeons make incisions in the eye using premeasured blades called keratomes.  We then make an opening in the capsule of the cataract using fine surgical instruments.  Then we use computer controlled ultrasound called phacoemulsification to break up and remove the cloudy defective lens. 

With laser cataract surgery, a precise laser will make the corneal incisions, make the opening in the capsule and break up the cataract lens all before the eye surgeon has to do anything.  This will likely add to the precision of the surgery and allow results to be more uniform.  Also, some cataract surgeons struggle with their technique and this technology could make an average cataract surgeon better.  Although Dr. Martin, Dr. Zweibel, and Dr. Mauro are accomplished cataract surgeons and have been awarded Top Doctor honors by Castle Connolly and also received an award for being a National Crystalens Center of Excellence in cataract surgery, we still look forward to this innovative and exciting technology.
