Is lasik right for you?

December 16, 2010 @ 08:40 AM — by unknown

The board certified eye surgeons at North Shore eye care in smithtown new york in long island are often asked the question, "Should I have Lasik?" by our patients.  We are proud to be a leader in laser eye surgery and laser vision correction and are happy to field these questions.  In a complimentary lasik evaluation, our lasik specialists go through the parameters of your unique visual system and explain what makes a good candidate for lasik.  You must be 18 years of age or older with a stable eye glass prescription.  Your eye must be free from eye pathology or diease and have good health otherwise.  Your cornea must be thich enough as measured by pachymetry, both manual and Orbscan.  Your cornea must be normal in pattern and show no signs of corneal weakness.  The ocular surface should not have significant signs of dry eye and we will also ask you about history of autoimmune or collagen vascular disease.  Also, we will review your medications with you to assure that they will not pose a problem.

In our smithtown new york eye care practice, roughly 8 out of 10 patients are good candidates for laser vision correction.  Of those, about 70 % can have bladeless custom lasik and 30% can have custom surface ablation.  Surface ablation, also called PRK, may be better for those patients with higher prescriptions, thinner corneas, or people with corneas with mild irregularity.  At North Shore eye care, we walk you through the process and make sure that you understand each step of the procedure.
