Preserving vision remains the main focus for Ophthalmologists
While preserving vision doesn't seem to be an important priority for most people, as people age the need to maintain good health is paramount. An interesting statistic that highlights the importance of maintaining good health is that people over the age of 65 consume 10 times the eye care as those under this age. It's a good thing Medicare starts at age 65. We at North Shore Eye Care recognize this problem and recommend routine annual exams in order to screen for early signs of disease that can lead to loss of vision.
In our modern age we have excellent treatments for many diseases such as cataracts, glaucoma, diabetes, and macula degeneration. While treatment for all these disease elements has improved recently, many of the dramatic developments have occurred with age related macula degeneration, a once almost untreatable disease. Dry type macula degeneration is best treated with antioxidant vitamins, zinc, lutein, and omega 3 fatty acids. Even in younger people without retinal disease a good diet is thought to be very helpful in preventing disease later on. This consists of incorporating healthy amounts of fruits and green leafy vegetable in your diet while avoiding a diet rich in fatty acids and above all avoiding cigarette smoking. Wet type macula degeneration if treated early can often preserve good visual function.
At North Shore Eye Care we are dedicated to serving our patient needs in a timely manner. To better meet this goal we are presently in the midst of an expansion in order to better serve our patients.
