Complete eye exam important before considering cataract surgery

It is important to look for other problems that may affect the visual outcome before considering cataract surgery.  Since cataracts affect people in middle age and up the first thing to look for is the start of dry eyes.  The tear film that lubricates the eyes is not only essential in creating comfort and preventing infection, but is essential for good vision.  When the tear film is inadequate patients often notice an irritation or foreign body sensation.  They often complain of tired eyes.  Inflammation and increased evaporative loss are common causes for this problem.  Contact lenses and medications like antihistamines can also lead to dry eyes.

Another important thing to consider is the health of the retina.  New studies using ocular computerized tomograms of the retina have shown subtle abnormalities in the central retina known as the macula can lead to subnormal vision following surgery.

The cataract experts at North Shore Eye Care are not only skilled and comfortable with all aspects of cataract surgery but have all the latest surgical and diagnostic equipment at their disposal.
