Does cataract surgery fix narrow angle glaucoma suspects?

November 08, 2010 @ 10:35 PM — by unknown

North Shore eye care, a leading cataract surgery eye care practice in smithtown new york in long island, is a cutting edge when it comes to cataract surgery.  There are times when the front of the eye is small and the drainage canal of the eye which is located where the cornea meets the iris at the trabecular meshwork becomes very narrow.  When the anterior chamber angle becomes narrow, the drainage canal of the eye can become closed off mechanically leading to sudden very high pressures in the eye.  This is narrow angle glaucoma and it often happens suddenly with pain, blurred vision, nausea, and a red eye.  The danger is that when this happens, the intraocular pressure in the eye can be dangerously high to the point where the vision becomes permanently compromised.   Many eye experts can do a laser iridotomy as a safety valve so that if the angle closes off, the fluid inside the eye can still circulate without a very high pressure.

In some cases, our board certified eye surgeons see a narrow angle with significant cataract or cloudy lens of the eye.  As a cataract forms, the bulky lens of the eye pushes forward, further crowding the drainage canal of the eye.  In these clinical situations, cataract surgery clears the vision by replacing the cloudy lens of the eye with a clear implant lens, but also creates plenty of space in the front of the eye because the implant lens is a fraction of the thickness of the defective cataract lens.

Come in to see our board certified cataract and glaucoma experts at North Shore eye care for your thorough evaluation.
