Primary open angle glaucoma affects approximately 2.22 million people in the United States and in 10 years this number is expected to rise to 3.3million, a major health problem. This doesn't include other secondary forms of open angle glaucoma as well as angle closure glaucoma, an easily treatable disease.  For this reason it is very important for people to be properly screened for this insidious disease, especially if there are increased risk factors such as family history.  Luckily, lowering intraocular pressure is very effective in decreasing the chance of visual loss.  For this reason early detection is very helpful, since lost vision can never be regained.
