Fall allergies and learning more about them at North Shore Eye Care

September 21, 2010 @ 02:36 PM — by John Mauro

Symptoms usually involve the lining the nose, causing allergic rhinitis, and  the membrane lining the eyelids and covering the whites of the eyes (conjunctiva), causing allergic conjunctivitis. As Fall comes around, ragweed is the key culprit. Signs and symptoms of allergies tend worsen on  hot, dry or windy days when there is significant  pollen and mold in the air. In the spring, wind-borne pollen from trees come across frequently. Pollen and mold spores are stirred up when vacuuming, mowing, or raking leaves. If you are very sensitive, it is best to wear a face mask while doing these chores.Try to reduce outdoor activity on dry and windy days.  Treatment can include but is not limited to, antihistamines, decongestants, and corticosteroids. These may either be in the form of eye drops, nasal sprays or oral medications. It is important to remember that avoidance of certain triggers can be your best friend.

In Long Island  we see patients from Smithtown, wading river, miller place, medford, farmingdale, farmingville, bellport, bayport, blue point, yaphank, brookhaven,  manhasset, east meadow, merrick, rockville center, garden city, mineola, and many other towns including the five boroughs.
