Glaucoma still a leading cause of blindness in spite of of better treatment and diagnosis

September 18, 2010 @ 09:14 PM — by Lawrence Zweibel

Glaucoma is still a leading cause of blindness in spite of of better treatment and diagnosis.  An astounding 80 million people suffer from this disease while at the same time 11 million people have gone blind from glaucoma.  There are many reasons for this dilemma with failure to diagnose glaucoma heading the list.  This is partly because at the time of examination intraocular pressures may be entirely normal.  Another reason is that visual fields may be  normal in the early stages of this disease.  Even when the diagnosis is properly made glaucoma can still rob people of their sight if patients aren't diligent with taking their prescribed medication.

At North Shore Eye Care our Board Certified Ophthalmologists are skilled in the early diagnosis and treatment of this insidious disease.  Our modern facility has the latest diagnostic testing capabilties and our surgeons are well versed in all treatment modalities ranging from medications, to laser, and even surgery if necessary.  Dr. Sidney Martin, the founding father ot this practice is in his 49th year of treating patients.  Dr. Lawrence Zweibel has consistently been named in Castle Connelly's Top Doctors over the last 10 years along with Dr. Jeffrey Martin.  Dr. Zweibel is Director of Opthalmology at St. Catherine's Hospital while Dr. Martin is a clinical professor at Stony Brook University.  They have recently joined by Dr. John Mauro, a fellowship trained lasik surgeon and uveitis specialist.
