Importance of routine eye exams
Routine eye exams are important and should be performed on an annual basis, much the way a general physical exam is indicated to ward off serious medical problems, In addition to being checked for new spectacles to optimize vision, it is important to be screened for ocular disease that can cause visual loss and can in some cases signal serious medical problems. Often times it is the ophthalmologist that makes the diagnosis of anemia, thyroid disease, hypertension, hypercholesteremia, and diabetes just to name a few of the many diseases that can be diagnosed when having a thorough ocular exam. In addition to medical diseases there are specific eye diseases that can be diagnosed and treated before visual can occur. Examples of this are glaucoma, cataracts, and macula degeneration.
For these reasons we strongly recommend annual check-ups for adults.
