Should you get the more expensive intraocular lens implant in cataract surgery?

In modern cataract surgery at North Shore eye care in long island new york in smithtown, patients can choose the standard implant lens that provides good distance vision in those without astigmatism or they can choose a premium implant that allows for far and near vision without the use of glasses or contact lenses.  This choice is difficult for some patients and we try to make it easier at our long island eye care practice.  When you come to our eye care office, you will meet with one of our four board certified eye surgeons and they will discuss your clinical situation.  If cataract surgery is necessary, our patients can choose a standard or premium implant lens for restoration of vision after removing the cloudy or cataract lens. 

Our cataract surgeons generally are in agreement that premium lenses are for those patients that want to wear their glasses less or not at all.  For those patients that do not mind wearing glasses, a standard implant is fine.  It is exciting that patients that no longer want to depend on glasses can choose a lens like Restor, Rezoom, Tecnis Multifocal or Crystalens and then see far  and near without the difficulty of glasses.  These special implants work either by a ring system in the lens that alternates for near and far or by moving slightly in the eye adjusting the focus of the eye.  Our board certified eye doctors have experience with all of the available technology and implant one of these premium implants in about 30 % of all their patients.
