Glaucoma screenings are important for sight preservation

August 14, 2010 @ 10:39 PM — by Lawrence Zweibel

Glaucoma is an insidious disease that slowly robs one of their vision.  By the time someone is aware of visual loss significant damage usually has occurred.  In its early stages even a trained professional could have trouble diagnosing this disease.  This is because it cannot be diagnosed by a simple pressure reading like blood pressure.  While the pressure is often elevated with glaucoma this is not always the case since the pressure can be completely normal or even low.  Direct observation of the optic nerve by a qualified ophthalmologist can often make the diagnosis.  This complemented by other tests such as ocular computerized topography which can analyze the health of the nerve fiber layer that enters the optic nerve can make the diagnosis in better than 90% of all cases.  Visual field testing is also quite helpful, but their has to be significant loss of nerve fibers before this test becomes abnormal.

To avoid loss of vision from this disease it is important to see your eye care professional on a regular basis.  Our board certified ophthalmologists offer the latest testilng equipment along with our friendly staff.  Our doctors  have been recognized in Castle Connelly's Top Doctors on a consistent basis.  So don't waste time.  Call today for your appointment.  We serve patients from all over Long Island from Riverhead, the Hamptons, Peconic, Cuthogue, the Moriches, Centereach, Patchogue, Coram, Port Jefferson, Stony Brook, Smithtown, Kings Park, Northport, Huntington, Dix Hills, Plainview, Roslyn, Garden City, Port Washington, Manhasset, Mineola, Massapequa, including New York City.
