Diabetes, a leading cause of visual disturbance
Diabetes, a disease that has reached epidemic proportions in the United States affects all organ systems in our bodies. Aside from raising blood sugar it is associated with small blood vessel disease which can lead to sores that fail to heal, especially in the lower extremities, kidney disease and high blood pressure, and visual disturbance which can to blindness. For these reasons diabetics need frequent medical evaluation. When first diagnosed a dilated fundus examination with an Ophthalmologist is advisable. With such an exam your eye specialist can detect such signs as proteinaceous leakage from vessels known as exudates, hemorrhages either within the retina or vitreous cavity, and abnormality of the retinal vessels which may be in the form of microaneurysms or abnormal vessel formation known as neovascularization. Neovascularity is especially serious as it can lead to severe hemorrhage, retinal detachment, and blindness.
