Glaucoma, a leading causse of blindness in this country
Glaucoma is a preventable disease that can lead to loss of vision and even blindness. In susceptible patients visual loss can occur quickly. This disease is so insidious that visual loss can be quite profound without the patient even being aware of it. Many times this disease is first diagnosed when people visit eye doctors for routine glass checks. There are many risk factors for this disease, such as family history, increasing age, and certain ethnic backgrounds. Interestingly a new risk factor recently observed are those people with thinner than average corneas.
It is now easier than ever to diagnose and treat this disorder with sophisticated visual field tests and ocular computerized tomograms to assess the health of the nerve fiber layer. Treatment modalities have improved as well with newer drops that don't have to be instilled as often, partially because multiple medications can be combined with a single drop. Because this is a preventable disease it is important see your eye care specialist if you haven't had a recent exam.
