Lasik vs. Lasek

July 05, 2010 @ 09:26 PM — by Lawrence Zweibel

Patients often get confused with the terms Lasik and Lasek.  These are terms that signify where laser reshaping on the cornea takes place.  Each method has its advantages and both are respected procedures.  Lasik is the more popular procedure as it has a quicker recovery with patients returning to the office the next day with vision that often exceeds 20/20 having little or no discomfort.  This procedure became even more refined with the advent of the Intra-Lase laser which gives unprecedented precision and safety when creating the corneal flap.  However, there are times when it may be better to avoid flap creation.  Examples of this are when the cornea is very thin or the correction is very large.  In these cases it's best to preserve as much corneal tissue as possible.  With lasek the epithelial cells covering the cornea are rolled back thus enabling laser reshaping of the corneal body or stroma.  When the laser reshaping is completed the same epithelial cells are rolled back to their original position.
