With all the surgical advances that have been achieved in recent times only cataract surgery can improve function even better than before the cataract first formed. Going back as little as 35 years patients were hospitalized for this procedure often staying for a period of 3 to 5 days. Complications were commonplace and visual rehabilitation was delayed while patients waited for their sutures to dissolve. When vision stablilized after approximately 6 weeks powerful magnifying spectacles were prescribed. The vision was anything but natural as objects appeared distorted and 20% larger than they appeared prior to surgery.
For people losing their sight from cataracts they now have the benefit of small incision surgery performed through a microscope. Sutures are no longer required as the wounds are self healing and the surgery can be performed on an outpatient basis. Vision is often excellent as modern lenses can treat astigmatism as well as enabling patients to see both near and far all without the need for glasses.
