LASIK and LASEK at North Shore Eye Care in Long Island, New York

June 14, 2010 @ 08:26 AM — by John Mauro

Lasik is the method of laser vision correction when the eye doctor or eye surgeon makes a thin flap in the superficial layers of the cornea. Our lasik patients are able to drive to see us the next day and there is very little discomfort. Lasek or PRK (surface ablation) is the safer method where there is no flap and is for those patients with thin corneas, irregular corneas or high prescriptions. Although regulations are changing, Lasek/PRK is still the preferred procedure for individuals in the military or certain athletes. The reason that surface ablation is safer in these cases is that we do not go as deeply into the cornea because there is no flap. With surface ablation, the laser eye surgery is placed right on the surface of the cornea. Healing takes a bit longer and blurred vision as well as discomfort can last a few more days. About 35 % of the laser vision correction at North Shore Eye care is now of the surface variant. Our physicians, Dr. Jeffrey Martin, Dr. Larry Zweibel and Dr. John Mauro all perform  laser vision correction and are board certified.

In  New York, we see patients from smithtown, nesconset, saint james, kings park, centereach, selden, coram, middle island, riverhead, ridge, stony brook, setauket, port jefferson, shoreham, quogue, east hampton, southampton, hampton bays, sag harbor, jamesport, cutchogue, mattituck, southold, yaphank, shirley, moriches, mastic, manorville, calverton and many other townships.
