Cataract surgery now offers a myriad of choices for people undergoing this procedure. Cararacts which are still a major cause of blindness in many parts of the world can now be treated with new intraocular lenses that often leave patients independent of spectacles. Diffractive multifocal lenses currently manufactured by two popular lens companies in the United States offer slightly different features. For instance the multifocal lens offered by Abbott instrument company has diffractive rings, which offer distance and near vision, spaced evenly across the lens. This enables people to read well even with poor illumination. With Alcon diffractive lenses there are no rings in the outer segment of the lens enabling people to see better in the distance when lighting conditions are poor. The crystalens by B&L is an accomadative lens that has no diffractive rings but enables people to see both near and far by moving forward when attempting to read.
