A better candidate for lasek...ask the lasik experts at North Shore eye care
North Shore eye care is a leader in laser vision correction including bladeless custom lasik and lasek. Our board certified lasik surgeons perform only the best in laser eye surgery specializing in ilasik and custom lasek laser eye surgery. In ilasik, we use intralase, a blade-free laser to make a flap in the superficial layers of the cornea. We then use VISX Customvue to do the laser vision correction. With this system, the laser takes a custom fingerprint of your vision and uses this to do the laser eye surgery. The lasik procedure has automatic centering, automatic tracking and iris registration for the very best result in every patient. Iris registration describes the way that the laser uses each patient's specific iris landmarks to perfectly place the vision correction part of the procedure.
Some patients do not qualify for lasik. Patients with thin corneas, irregular corneas, high prescriptions, and moderately severe dry eyes may be better suited for lasek, which is a type of custom advanced surface ablation. With lasek, the skin layer of the eye is gently peeled back and then the custom laser vision correction is used to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism. The epithelial sheet is then placed back on the cornea and heals. With lasek, the final visual results are the same, but the healing can take a bit longer than lasik and there can be more discomfort.
