The first Symposium for Optometrists in Smithtown New York Long Island
Sunday May 16 was the date for the first North Shore Eye Care Symposium for Continuing Education for Optometrists. It presented an opportunity for optometrists locally to get 6 COPE credits and interact with colleagues. The day started with Dr. Sidney Martin, the founding eye surgeon of North Shore eye Care in Smithtown New york in long island. He spoke about the history of eye care on long island. He spoke about the history of cataract surgery and how eye doctors dealt with emergencies before beepers and cell phones. Dr. John Mauro then spoke about uveitis diagnosis and treatment. Dr. Mauro is a fellowship trained uveitis specialist that works full time at North Shore eye care. Dr. Jeffrey Martin then spoke about the current trends in laser vision correction or lasik and cataract surgery. Dr. Jim Thimmons spoke on several interesting topics of the anterior segment. Mary Pat Johnson of Corcoran Consulting Group spoke about optometric co-management and Dr. Brett Rosenblatt spoke about the current treatments in retina. The day was concluded with Dr. Raj Sarwal speaking on Glaucoma.
The symposium marked the first of a twice annual symposium that North Shore Eye Care intends to have. Educational experiences like this help both ophthalmology and optometry get a firm grasp on the current trends in eye care. Cooperation between optometrists and ophthalmologists is necessary if we intend to continue a high level of care to our patients in the future. Dr. Jeffrey Martin was pleased that the day went so smoothly.
