New lens options offered offered with cataract surgery
As early as the 1970's cataract surgery was pretty straightforward. The cataractous lens was removed and after a period of about 6 weeks weeks you would get a prescription for glasses. The lenses in these lenses were very thick making adaptation to the real world very difficult. Intraocular lens implantation performed simultaneously with cataract removal changed all that. Now, as lenses have continued to evolve there are many choices available to patients. For instance available now are accommadative lenses that change power as you focus. An example of this is the Bausch and Lomb Crystalens. Other lenses available are diffractive multifocal lenses known for their excellent distance and near vision. Still other lenses offer visual improvement for those patients with visually significant astigmatism.
