Cataract surgery in the baby boomers... ask the cataract experts at North Shore Eye Care

Posted on Apr 23 2010 by unknown

Cataracts develop as part of the aging process.  A cataract is a natural clouding of the crystalline lens of the eye as we age.  Many patients develop visually significant cataracts later in life, but others develop them earlier.  At North Shore Eye Care in Smithtown New York in Long Island, our board certified cataract surgeons only suggest cataract surgery when the visual symptoms of cataract surgery are significant enough to affect quality of life.  This point happens at different degrees of cataract in different people depending on lifestyle.  In our baby boomers, these patients seem less willing to deal with glare and blurred vision then the generation before.  Our older cataract patients seem willing to tolerate more difficulty.

When it comes to doing cataract surgery in our baby boomers, our cataract experts take the time to explain the cataract surgery procedure as well as the intraocular lens implant choices at our long island office.  We use the best in small incision cataract surgery using phacoemulsification or gentle computer controlled ultrasound.  We do not use needles around the eyes, stitches, or even an eye patch following surgery.  Our cataract patients can choose a standard implant that corrects distance vision, but these patients have to wear glasses for near work following cataract surgery.  There are wonderful multifocal and accommodating implants also available.  These IOLs make a patient able to see far and near without glasses or contact lenses in most cases.  These lenses are the crystalens, restor, tecnis multifocal and rezoom.  Many of our baby boomers are upgrading to the improved lens choices.

In long island new york in suffolk and nassau counties, we see patients from smithtown, nesconset, saint james, kings park, huntington, cold spring harbor, commack, northport, centerport, greenlawn, dix hills, melville, farmingdale, deer park, bay shore, babylon, lindenhurst, massapequa, merrick, rockville center, garden city, glen cove, plainview, woodbury, syosset, bethpage, manhasset, east meadow, levittown, hempstead, hicksville, westbury, roslyn, great neck, new york city, manhattan, queens, brooklyn, bronx, and many other towns.
