Ptosis or "droopy eyelids"

March 18, 2010 @ 08:41 PM — by John Mauro

The word Ptosis refers to an abnormal drooping of the upper eyelid. This may occur for many reasons. At North Shore Eye Care we typically see patients who have dermatochalasis, which is a fancy term that means your lids may be droopy from excess skin above your eyes that develops as we get older. Patients usually start to notice that one eye appears smaller than the other, which appears that way, but in reality it’s that one eye is droopier than the other. Some individuals find that their drooping eyelids  actually make them feel sleepy, while others feel it gives them headaches because they constantly need to raise their eyebrows to lift the eyelids to see better. Many patients also find themselves lifting there head up and back to see better and that can lead to upper neck and back pain and strain.

When you see an ophthalmologist, they will examine your eyes and perform  several tests to establish what the cause of your eyelid  droop is. They will also perform measurements of your eyelids as well as take photographs of your eyelids. After examination, most people need an operation to treat significant ptosis. The simplest procedure involves creating a small incision in the natural crease on your upper eyelid and removing excess skin. The incision site is then closed with stitches, which are typically removed in 7 days.

Here at North Shore Eye Care, we see patients from all over long island and the five boroughs  (smithtown, nesconset, saint james, kings park, fort salonga, cold spring harbor, huntington, commack, northport, centerport, greenlawn, dix hills, melville, deer park, massapequa, lindenhurst, bay shore, babylon, farmingdale, woodbury, syosset, bethpage, plainview, merrick, rockville center, garden city, mineola, roslyn, jericho, port washington, manhasset, hicksville, levittown, oyster bay, glen cove, westbury, east meadow, new york city, manhattan, brooklyn, queens, and the Bronx.)
