Laser in cataract surgery... ask the cataract experts at North Shore eye care in smithtown new york in long island

Many patients ask us if we perform cataract surgery with laser at North Shore Eye Care in Smithtown New York.  Many of our Long Island patients think that the most modern way to perform cataract surgery would naturally be with laser.  Our board certified eye doctors and eye surgeons explain that laser is used for many things in eye care, but not cataract surgery itself.  A cataract is a clouding of the natural lens of the eye.  Using IV sedation and numbing eye drops, we use gentle computer controlled ultrasound called phacoemulsification to break up and remove the cloudy lens.  The capsule or skin of the grape that remains is used to hold the new intraocular implant or IOL.  Because the opening in the capsule we use to remove the defective lens is smaller than the implant (IOL), it remains stable for the rest of your life in most cases.  In our cataract treatment technique, we do not use stitches, an eye patch or needles around the eyes.  Our patients return to the comfort of their home the very same day.

We do use laser if the capsule gets cloudy months after cataract surgery.  This is called posterior capsule opacity and happens in about 30 % of all cataract patients.  In the healing response, the capsule gets cloudy and your vision may become blurred.  Some people call it a secondary cataract, although it has nothing to do with actual cataract formation.  We use a Yag laser right in our office to gentle remove the center part of the cloudy capsule so that you can see again the very same day.  There are also lasers being developed to perform specific parts of the cataract surgery, but this is all currently in study and not FDA approved.
