Cataract surgery with macular degeneration

Macular degeneration is a widespread eye condition that causes loss of central vision in patients.  Typically, macular degeneration is an eye problem of advancing age and is more typical in fair skin and light eyed patients.  Macular degeneration runs in families and tends to occur slowly; therefore regular eye examinations are important.  The eye doctors at North Shore Eye Care in Smithtown new york in Long island examine many patients with this eye problem and typically see drusen or calcification in the macula, which is the center of the retina, as the first sign.  Patient complain of metamorphopsia which describes distortion of a visual image.  There are treatments for macular degeneration including eye vitamins, laser and possible injections for wet macular degeneration.  Macular degeneration is dry when there is no bleeding under the retina and wet when new blood vessels form and start to bleed under the retina.  As patients age, cataracts develop as well.  A cataract is a clouding of the natural lens of the eye.  When a cataract develops in a patient with macular degeneration, it can be difficult to determine whether vision loss is attributed to the cataract or the damage to the retina.

At North Shore Eye Care, our board certified cataract surgeons attempt to make sure that cataract surgery in the setting of macular degeneration will be helpful to our Long Island patients.  We have the retina evaluated by a retinal specialist and use highly technologic tests like OCT. Our cataract doctors do counsel our patients to make sure that expectations can be achieved.  We help our macular degeneration patients to understand that cataract surgery will have certain visual benefits, but may be limited based on retinal disease.  At times, we are pleasantly suprised with the visual performance after cataract surgery.  If you have macular degeneration and are told that you have cataracts as well, contact the cataract specialists at North Shore Eye Care in Smithtown New York for an eye evaluation.
