Cataract surgery involves replacing the natural lens within the eye with a new a new artificial lens. While most people think this is an operation for only the elderly, a surprising number of people are candidates for this procedure even as early as when they enter their forties. Trauma, diabetes, steroid antiinflammatory medication, and heredity are often the cause for early cataract formation. Often patients are confused as to when cataract surgery is appropriate for them. A term often used by patients when questioning their surgeons is "are my cataracts ripe enough." This term however, can lead to confusion since it is somewhat arbitrary as to just when the cataract became "ripe." A more realistic way of judging the appropriateness for surgery is when you notice increasing difficulty performing daily activities such as reading or driving a car.
