Cataract surgery in the flomax patient

North Shore Eye Care has been at the forefront of cataract surgery for many years.  Cataract surgery is a quick and painless outpatient procedure in most cases.  Our Smithtown new York patients are able to stay in their own clothes and return to the comfort of their home the very same day.  Cataract surgery is performed through a microscopic incision using gentle computer controlled ultrasound called phacoemulsfication.  After the cloudy lens of the eye or cataract is removed a small intraocular lens or IOL is placed to restore vision.  Dr. Jeffrey Martin, Dr. Larry Zweibel and Dr. John Mauro are all board certified and specialize in advanced cataract surgery including premium implants.  We specialize in accommodating implants like crystalens and are a National Crystalens Cataract Surgery Center of Excellence.  Our board certified eye doctors and eye surgeons constantly strive for excellence and continually advance technique and technology.  Dr. Jeff Martin and Dr. Zweibel have both been included as Top Doctors in the New York Metro Area by Castle Connolly for the past few years.

In patients that take Flomax, it is important that the cataract surgeon know that information.  Flomax is a prostate medication that relaxes the muscle of the prostate allowing men to have more regular urinary flow.  The muscle of the iris of the eye has very similar receptors to those in the prostate.  The significance of this is that patients on flomax often do not dilate well for cataract surgery and can even lose their dilation in the middle of the cataract surgery.  If the cataract surgeon is not prepared, it can make the surgery more difficult and more dangerous.  Our eye doctors are experts in cataract surgery with flomax and rountinely use devices that ensure adequate dilation during cataract surgery.  This makes even a flomax cataract surgery completely routine.  Our Long island patients are lucky to have such a state of the art eye care practice so close to home.

In Long Island in nassau and suffolk counties, we see patients from smithtown, nesconset, saint james, kings park, islip, islandia, hauppauge, lake grove, bohemia, ronkonkoma, holtsville, holbrook, sayville, lindenhurst, commack, northport, huntington, stony brook, setauket, port jefferson, centereach, head of the harbor, nissequogue, poquott, belle terre, old field and many other towns.
