North Shore Eye Care was founded in 1962 by Dr. Sidney Martin in Smithtown New York in Long Island's Suffolk county. Dr. Martin, a board certified eye doctor and eye surgeon started his eye care center to take care of Long Islanders with glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration, dry eye, uveitis, diabetes and diabetic retinopathy as well as laser eye surgery later in the 1970s. The eye care practice grew quickly and Dr. Martin took on Dr. Larry Zweibel and later, his son Dr. Jeffrey Martin. Recently, the eye care practice took in Dr. John Mauro, a comprehensive ophthalmologist who specializes in uveitis and intraocular inflammation. North Shore Eye Care has been a leader in cataract surgery with their board certified cataract surgeons and cataract doctors for many years. We perform cataract surgery by an advanced technique including no stitches, no needles and no eye patch. We use IV sedation and numbing eye drops to relax our patients, who are able to stay in their own comfortable clothes and return home the very same day. We use gentle ultrasound or phacoemulsification to remove the defective lens or cataract and then replace the cloudy lens with an intraocular lens implants. The new implants have been a wonderful addition to our armamentarium including the premium implants that reduce the need for glasses and contact lenses. We use the accommodating lens, crystalens as well as the multifocal lenses, restor, rezoom, and tecnis multifocal. These lenses help patients to see far and near without the use of glasses or contact lenses. We also use standard implants in many patients that desire good distance vision without glasses.
Sometimes, the capsule that holds the new implant becomes cloudy over several months. This is a normal part of healing. Some patients heal and the capsule remains clear and others become only slightly hazy. If the capsule clarity interferes with the quality of vision, we suggest Yag Capsulotomy. With yag capsulotomy, we use a gentle laser right in the office to open up the central part of the capsule. This is painless and takes about one minute. About one third of patients that have cataract surgery require a yag capsulotomy. If it is necessary, patients return to normal activity immediately after the day of the laser.
In long island new york in suffolk and nassau county, we see patients from smithtown, nesconset, saint james, kings park, islip, islandia, hauppauge, lake grove, bohemia, ronkonkoma, sayville, lindenhurst, commack, northport, stony brook, setauket, port jefferson, centereach, nissequogue, head of the harbor, old field, poquott, belle terre, sound beach, fort salonga, and many other towns.
