Laser vision correction...when is PRK a better choice?

Laser vision correction has been a successful laser eye surgery procedure for years and has become safer and more advanced over the years.  The eye doctors and eye surgeons at North Shore Eye Care in Smithtown New York in Long Island have been perfecting and lasik procedure and currently do all bladeless custom lasik  or ilasik.  The great thing about lasik today is that we use Intralase, a blade free laser to make our flaps in lasik.  This is the safest and most precise way to make a flap.  We use Customvue by Visx for our laser eye surgery corrections.  This uses Wavescan to get a custom fingerprint of each patient's vision called a waveprint or wavemap.  This is placed on the patients eye using iris registration, automatic centering and automatic tracking.  Ilasik is the most precise and safest way to have lasik and our long island patients benefit from that.

In some cases, doing laser vision correction without the flap or on the surface of the eye is the best way to do it.  With prk, lasek, or epilasik, the laser vision correction is still custom, but there is no flap.  With advanced surface ablation, healing time is a bit longer and there is usually more discomfort for a couple of days.  However, the final visual result is the same.  Our patients that have thin corneas, irregular corneas, or high prescriptions sometimes benefit from surface laser vision correction because it can be safer in those clinical situations.  Also, some patients with severe dry eye can benefit from surface laser vision correction.  In your free lasik consultation with one of our board certified lasik surgeons and lasik doctors, we will discuss your specific ocular situation in your eye examination to best inform you of your options.
