Cataract surgery has changed dramatically over the last 20 years.  In 1962 when Dr. Sidney Martin, a board certified eye doctor and eye surgeon, cataract surgery was performed through a large incision.  The cloudy lens of cataract was removed through the incision in one piece and then the incision was sutured.  There were no intraocular implants or IOLs so patients had to get very thick glasses called aphakic glasses so that they could see better.  These glasses were so thick that there was significant distortion of vision and patients were never really that happy with their functional vision.  Because cataract surgery was difficult to get through, patients would wait until they were essentially blind before considering cataract surgery.

Today, the board certified cataract doctors and cataract surgeons at North Shore Eye Care in Smithtown New York in Long Island in Suffolk County are able to complete cataract surgery through a 2 millimeter incision without the use of stitches, an eye patch or a needle around the eye.  Deep sedation is not necessary today.  Our patient get IV sedation and eye drops to numb the surface of the eye.  Cataract surgery takes a few minutes and after the cloudy lens or cataract is removed, an intraocular implant or IOL is used to restore vision.  We use several implants including premium implants that are designed to provide near and far vision without glasses or contact lenses.  We sue accommodating implants like Crystalens and multifocal implants like Restor, Rezoom, and Tecnis Multifocal.  We also use Acrysof Toric to reduce or eliminate astigmatism.  This leads to the best possible vision and the best possible result.
