Presbyopia is an aging process of the eye that causes people with good distance vision to need reading glasses in the 40s. People that are nearsighted or myopic tend to need bifocals or they need to take off their distance glasses to see near. Farsighted or hyperopic patients start needing reading glasses in their 40s and then need distance as well some years later. Everyone is affected by presbyopia and it can be quite an adjustment. The reason for presbyopia is that the natural lens of the eye becomes more dense as we age and when the internal muscles of focus or accommodation flex, they can no longer change the shape of the lens and therefore little focusing change results.
