Different types of cataracts needing cataract surgery
There are several different kinds of cataracts that eventually made need cataract surgery. At North Shore Eye Care in Smithtown New York, we are experts at cataract care. A nuclear cataract presents as a browning and clouding of the center of the lens of the eye. This type of cataract causes blurred vision and can often cause frequent changes in eyeglass prescription as it grows. In our Long Island practice serving Nassau and Suffolk counties including Huntington, Dix Hills, Commack, Stony Brook, Port Jefferson, Lake Grove, St James, Kings Park, Northport and Fort Salonga, we see many nuclear cataracts that need surgery.
Cortical cataracts are cataracts that form spokes in the outer layers of the lens. These spokes tend to grow centrally and obscure vision. Our "Top Doctors: New York Metro Area" as voted by Castle Connolly Ltd. are experts at identifying cortical cataracts and determining the degree of interference with one's daily life. Like nuclear cataracts, cortical cataracts are fixed with cataract surgery which is usually performed in a short period of time without painful injections, sutures or an eye patch. A patient gets back to normal activities within a couple of days. Dr. Jeffrey Martin and Dr. Lawrence Zweibel perform hundreds of cataract operations each year.
Posterior subcapsular cataracts are cataracts that form on the back part of the lens. These cataracts commonly cause significant glare symptoms. These are also fixed when they interfere with a patient's quality of life.
Many cataracts are worsened by overexposure to UV light, smoking, diabetes, family history and other causes although they tend to happen with age.
At North Shore Eye, Dr. Martin and Dr. Zweibel use the latest in intraocular lens technology including multifocal, accommodating and toric lenses. These IOLs help to reduce the need for glasses following surgery and include restor, rezoom, crystalens, crystalens HD and toric lens for astigmatism.
